Duterte’s Kitchen warms underprivileged with hearty soup

Partido Demokratiko Pilipino’s “Duterte’s Kitchen” lives up to its promise of feeding the underprivileged.

But aside from filling up the enraged stomachs of those who need them, it went beyond that promise.

They have also encouraged benefactors to contribute to the cause. Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi auctioned a painting of Japanese artist Keisuke Teshima that was given as a gift, reported Concept Central.

The auction also included 600 pieces P3,000-worth calderos. Its proceeds is enough to feed 168,000 people.

In an interview with ABS-CBN, DK project head Dexter Araquel said the cause started with lugaw and champorado as the only available options.

But after two months of operations, DK was able to get donations that allowed them to serve full meals for street kids. They are now also able to teach kids how to read and write.

Duterte’s Kitchen is stationed in Quezon City, but the group also visits far-flung areas.

It recently warmed the heart of the victims of a fire incident in Malibay, Pasay by serving hot arroz caldo and distributing 500 packs of rice and 300 packs of grocery items.

The group also went to Batangas recently to reach out to some 2,850 members of the Badjao cultural minority. The Badjaos, who are usually seen asking for alms from car to car, benefitted from DK’s 10 giant cooking pots.
DK also surprised Badjao kids with school supplies and toys.

For some volunteers, the program did not merely help the underprivileged because it also helped them lift awareness on people’s needs.

“Mababait pala ang mga Badjao. Goodjao nga ang tawag sa kanila. At higit sa lahat, masayahin sila at marunong magpasalamat,” an unnamed volunteer told Concept Central.
