Japanese princess to lose royal title for love

by

Princess Mako, the granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, is set to lose her royal status upon her engagement to a commoner named Kei Komuro, who works in a law firm.

Under the Imperial Law in Japan, any female member of the royal family who chooses to marry a commoner will lose her royal title.

The teleserye-like love story of the two started when they met as students at the International Christian University in Tokyo five years ago.

The 25-year old princess, however, is not the only one in the history of Japan to choose love over crown.

Prior to her engagement, her aunt Sayako, the only daughter of Emperor Akihito, also lost her title when she married Yoshiki Kuroda, a town planner, in 2005.

With Princess Mako’s engagement to Kei Komuro, some are concerned about what it would leave the royal family.

The family now has 19 members, 14 of whom are female. Only six of them are unmarried.

The Imperial Law only allows the throne to be passed to princes, of which there are three: Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Prince Akishino, and Prince Hisahito.
