Fab or Flab? Filipinas with muscles
Women have muscles too, you know – some more than others while some others work really, really hard to develop their body to the extent that they’re more muscular than your average gym instructor.
Of course, serious female athletes spend more time in the gym training than in front of a mirror doing their makeup. However, the world we live in likes muscular men and petite women – and not the other way around.
Still, a number of female athletes and bodybuilders have made their name by seriously sweating it out in the gym and pumping iron. Here’s a selection of but a few of those:
Rowena Marcaida Walters
One of the Best Asian Female Bodybuilders is Filipina Rowena Marcaida, owner, XTRM Fitness Gym.
She flexed her fabulous six-pack on the world stage recently at the 2013 Arnold Amateur Female Bodybuilding Competition.
The 5ft tall mom-of-one weighs in at 50kg, and she clinched an immensely creditable 5th place in the under-55kg category in the competition.
Rowena has been pumping iron for eight years. “I’m a Filipina Bodybuilder that competes internationally… I am a goal-oriented type of person, focused in everything I do. But like any other women, I love to have fun with my friends, love what other women does. Am also a single-mom of a 14 year old boy,” she writes on her Facebook page.
“Bodybuilding is not so popular in the Philippines, especially with women, there are only a few of us. In the future I can change that I want to be an ambassador.”
Gemmalyn Crosby, an International Federation of BodyBuilding and Fitness Professional Athlete, returned home to the Philippines earlier this year after bagging the bronze medal in a major international competition in India.
Gemma has big plans for 2014. She is planning a big event, the Gemmalyn Crosby Classic 2014, in her home country, the Philippines. She also dreams of getting more involved in big screen fighting roles in 2014.
Gemma gained her IFBB Pro Card by winning her class in the prestigious Arnold Classic Amateur in the USA, is a Labrada-sponsored athlete and represents 8x Mr Olympia, Lee Haney’s IAFS Certification course as a Master Trainer. She is a certified instructor of Filipino Combat Systems.
Gemma is currently busy with her Fitness Training Club, as well as organizing charitable work and major competitions.
“Lately I’ve been honing my ninja skills, also doing some film work as well. I have been spending a lot of time building up my boxing, MMA gym called Punch Performance Center,” says Gemma, who started out in body building after giving birth to her son.
“Back then, I got very focused into getting into the best shape of my life so I started my journey into bodybuilding. I also started training to help my fighting skills; I liked the results and kept going with it. Now, I do both Fitness and Martial Arts,” said Gemma, who also has a Business Management degree and currently studying for a master’s degree in Nutrition.
Luz McClinton beat a tough field that included celebrated health and fitness expert Ashley Horner to rule the 2012 World Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (WBFF) Southwest US Championship in Oklahoma, USA.
The 35-year-old professional bodybuilder who once joined the local version of the Big Brother reality show, bagged the Pro Card Winner and Figure World Champion title of the tournament held last year on November 10.
McClinton also bagged the bronze in the Diva Fitness of the same competition.
Besides Filipinas, there are many others too who have worked on their bodies, sculpted them rigorously, and built them beautifully.
