JUST IN: Bill extending passport validity passes congress

by

The bill seeking the extension of the Philippine passports’ validity from current five to 10 is only one step away from being a law.

The House of Representatives has ratified Tuesday the bill that authors say would ease the life of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Only the signature of President Rodrigo Duterte is now needed for it to become a law.

Under the bill, passports of minors (ages 0-17) would be valid for a period of five years, while passports of those aged 18 and above would be valid for 10 years.

Earlier on Monday, the Senate has approved its own version of the bill on its third and final reading.

“We owe a lot to our OWFs. Giving them a 10-year guarantee on their right to travel abroad will certainly be a great help to them,” Senator Cynthia Villar earlier said in a statement.

The President is expected to approve the bill, which he also mentioned in his State of the Nation Address last year.

“Tutal kayo naman ang maggagawa ng batas, you’re the ones who will pass the law, even if you make it good for 30 years, okay ako, bahala kayo. Basta stretch a little bit,” Duterte said, referring to the House of Representatives.

(It’s you who make the law, you’re the ones who will pass the law, even if you make it good for 30 years, I’m okay with it. You take care of it. Just stretch it a little bit.)
