Online readers voted to include Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte among the renowned list of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people released annually.
A frontrunner in the 2017 online poll, Duterte gained 5% of the votes even with rivals ranging from the leader of the world’s Catholics to international pop stars, world champion athletes, and multi-billion-worth start-up founders.
“Closely following Duterte in the TIME 100 poll were Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Pope Francis, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg — all of whom received 3% of the total “yes” votes,” TIME reported in its website Monday noon.
The poll shows other personalities including talk show hosts Oprah Winfrey, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Kimmel as well as world leaders Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Angela Merkel.
The list of TIME’s most influential people, dubbed #Time100, has been a yearly tradition of the international publication.
This year, the list will be released on April 20.
The vote in favor of Duterte is an international affirmation of the influence he wields — the weight of his words and his reach.
Since gaining power as Philippine president in May 2016, Duterte has waged a bloody anti-drug campaign that has reportedly claimed some 8,000 lives of suspected drug users and pushers.
